Airdrie and Coatbridge are two small industrial towns in the district of North Lanarkshire. The Sea Cadet Unit was formed on 18 December 1942. It was originally based in Coatbridge where, as far as we are able to determine, the headquarters was based in the Gartsherrie area of the town. There are no records of cadets or volunteers until 1956 when the Commanding Officer was listed as James J Tocher.
In October 1960 the Unit was visited by Rear Admiral John McSeath, and in 1965 it was visited by the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps.
At this time the Unit moved its premises to Bore Road, Airdrie. During this time the cadets would go on annual camp to Caldercruix dressed in their full uniform.
The Unit continued to thrive and received Efficiency Pennants from 1965 to 1968. In 1977 the Unit was visited by Captain Ian Fenshaw.
In 1987 the Girls Nautical Training Corps joined Airdrie and Coatbridge Unit. At this time the Unit had moved its Headquarters to Wellwynd and occupied the old Doctors Surgery.
In 1991 the Unit Headquarters was again moved, this time to make way for sheltered housing. The local councillor at the time fought to retain the Sea Cadets in the area and we were re-housed in our present home. In February 1991 ‘TS Enterprise’ was officially opened in The Mission Hall, Motherwell Street, Airdrie. Since then the Unit has received Efficiency Pennants and Burgees.
Like most Units, Airdrie and Coatbridge has seen good times and some not so good. We currently have 15 cadets which are continually growing as well as a dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to increase the profile of the Unit.
